Austin Energy NWACA Pruning Surveys and Projects Will Start in late July
Austin Energy regularly conducts maintenance pruning in order to maintain proper clearances between trees and their electrical cables. Such pruning helps prevent power outages not only during ice storms, but also during normal tree growth.
Due to their respect for the NWACA Oak Wilt Suppression Program DO NOT PRUNE OAKS FROM FEBRUARY THROUGH JUNE campaign, Austin Energy has scheduled their planned NWACA neighborhood pruning for the July through January interval. NWACA certainly appreciates this support.
Austin Energy will soon start surveying selected areas within the NWACA to identify the current pruning needs. The Austin Energy survey and pruning information is linked to below. It fully defines the detailed planning process which interlocks the survey results and proposed pruning with the property owner/resident. Each resident/owner will be presented the proposed project plan and will be asked to sign the plan before any actual pruning happens. The actual pruning will conform to proper Oak Wilt Suppression Program procedures (painting cuts, sterilizing equipment before pruning each tree, etc.)
Austin Energy conducts neighborhood pruning projects every 4 years. However, they may revisit every 2 years in areas with fast growing trees. In general the clearances are 4 feet for slow growing trees and 8 feet for fast growing trees.
The initial NWACA survey area is bounded as follows:
Southern boundary- the Y intersection of Parkcrest and Balcones
Northern Boundary - Farwest Blvd
Eastern Boundary - Mopac
Western Boundary - Ridge Oak South of FM 2222, then it follows Highland Hills Dr up Shadow Valley Drive and then to Knollwood and up to Mesa
