To help us become a Firewise community, we have much work ahead of us in NWACA, to make our homes fire-adapted, that is, able to withstand the embers from a wildfire that might occur in our greenbelt. To help individual homeowners identify things they can do to establish a defensible area around their homes and to harden the home itself, we need a cadre of trained home wildfire assessors.
The Austin Fire Department will be offering a class on becoming a home wildfire assessor on July 13th, and another one on July 14. The training is a one-day session, involving both classroom and practical experience examining several area homes for wildfire risks. The attached flyer provides more information.
If you are interested in taking the training, please send email to nwacaweb@gmail.com .

Note that with this month's issue, we're making a transition to publishing late in the month, so what we publish is fresh for the month named in its title. At the end of July, we'll publish the August newsletter, and proceed in that way going forward.
Press Release - May 17, 2013 - Central Texas Regional
Mobility Authority
Lane
Closures Planned
(Austin, Texas) – Intermittent night time lane
closures will begin on MoPac (Loop 1) between Lady Bird Lake and Parmer Lane
beginning Sunday, May 19, 2013 and continuing through the end of July. The lane
closures are needed to allow roadway designers to survey the corridor and
collect soil samples for construction of the MoPac Improvement Project. To
minimize traffic impacts, the lane closures will only occur between the hours
of 9:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. Lane closures will be brief, with surveyors spending
approximately 15 minutes at each location. Significant noise or light impacts
are not anticipated during these operations. The survey work will also involve
low altitude helicopter flights over the corridor. Those flights are expected
to take place the week of May 28th between the daytime hours of 9:00 a.m. and
3:00 p.m.
Drilling rigs will be deployed the week of May
28th to collect the soil samples. Because the work will occur at night, the
drilling rigs may disturb nearby neighbors. Nighttime noise will be an ongoing
issue for the duration of the project, as much of the work will occur at night.
There will be no lane closures during special events or on holidays, including
the upcoming Memorial Day Weekend.
The MoPac Improvement Project involves the
addition of one Express Lane in each direction on an 11-mile stretch of MoPac
from Lady Bird Lake to Parmer Lane and includes the construction of more than
7-miles of sound walls, bicycle and pedestrian improvements and aesthetic
enhancements. Construction is expected to begin in the fall of 2013 and be
completed by late 2015. The project team will be implementing a comprehensive
community outreach program to keep corridor residents and drivers informed
about the project. For more information visit www.MopacExpress.com

On Saturday, April 27, we had a presentation on deer-resistant and drought-resistant gardening, followed by a tour of neighborhood yards with landscaping that illustrated many of the examples discussed.
For those who weren't able to attend, you can see two presentations from that event and a list of drought-resistant plans for our neighborhood in our NWACA Library at the left. Look for the items with a 2013 Apr 27 date.
